Traditional lidar scanning technology

Single point laser ranging with a suitable optomechanical scanning system to obtain large field of view, high resolution laser point cloud data.

The proper scanning structure allows the radar to obtain a larger field of view and resolution, and at the same time promotes the stability of the entire radar structure. Therefore, the choice of scanning technology greatly affects the life cycle of the onboard laser radar, and then determines whether the radar is Can be applied to production cars.

Conventional mechanical scanning, which drives a single-point or multi-point ranging module to rotate 360° or other large angles. At present, the laser radars that we see on unmanned test vehicles are mostly laser radars based on mechanical scanning.

This method is the most direct and technically difficult, so this type of scanning laser radar can be used first. However, considering the factors such as lenses, mechanical structures, and circuit boards, multi-point ranging modules are usually not optimized in size and weight. Therefore, when the motor drives the module for a long time of rotation, the bearings are easily lost, making the traditional mechanical scanning reliable. The situation has been criticized, and the cost of increased losses is also a very real problem, which prompted LiDAR manufacturers to start researching alternatives.
