The difference between lidar and millimeter wave radar

A laser radar is a radar system that emits a laser beam to detect the position and velocity of a target. The millimeter wave radar refers to a radar that operates in the millimeter wave band. The millimeter wave is essentially an electromagnetic wave. The frequency band of the millimeter wave is special, the frequency is higher than the radio, lower than the visible light and the infrared light, and the frequency is roughly in the range of 10 GHz to 200 GHz. This is a very suitable frequency band for the automotive field. So what is the difference between LiDAR and millimeter wave radar?
1. From the working principle, Lidar and millimeter wave radar are basically similar. They use echo imaging to construct the detected object, which is equivalent to the difference between human beings using both eyes to detect and bats relying on ultrasonic detection. However, the electromagnetic wave emitted by the laser radar is a straight line, mainly based on the emission of light particles, and the electromagnetic wave emitted by the millimeter wave radar is a cone beam. The antenna of this band is mainly electromagnetic radiation.
2. In terms of detection accuracy, Lidar has the advantages of high detection accuracy, wide detection range and strong stability. In terms of accuracy, the detection range of millimeter wave radar is directly restricted by the frequency band loss. High-band radars must be used, pedestrians must not be perceived, and all obstacles around them cannot be accurately modeled. This is not as good as the lidar.
3. In terms of anti-jamming capability, since the laser radar is detected by the emitted light beam, it is greatly affected by the environment, and the light beam cannot be used normally after being blocked, so it cannot be opened in the bad weather such as rain, snow, fog, dust storms, etc. The millimeter wave seeker has a strong ability to penetrate fog, smoke, and dust, so it can be detected in bad weather. At this point, the millimeter wave radar is superior.
